Where Does Mold Grow?

Mold is not often considered an emergency in the same way that a fire or a flood on a property is. However, while floods and fires threaten physical safety, the presence of mold can have a hidden, severe threat to health. If unaddressed, mold on a property can cause:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Respiratory conditions like difficulty breathing
  • Memory impairment
  • Trouble focusing on tasks at hand
  • Neuromuscular impairment such as difficulty picking up and manipulating objects or walking
  • Heart conditions like myocarditis

But the real challenge in dealing with mold is finding it. Unlike a flood or a fire, the presence of mold isn’t immediately visible. You may smell it somewhere on a property, but where is the mold located?

Mold Growth Is Potentially Everywhere

First, it’s essential to understand that even when mold can’t be smelled or seen on a property, it is, in some sense, always there. Mold starts as tiny spores, drifting in the air, waiting to settle down in an environment with the right conditions. Unless a property has access to industrial-grade, expensive environmental filtering, and atmospheric processing, mold spores are already in the air.

Every time a door or window is opened, mold spores come in. This is why bread goes bad when left alone for a few days. Mold spores already in the air have settled down on older bread and finally found the right breeding environment.

Where To Look For Mold Damage

The type of mold that can cause severe symptoms usually requires dark, moist environments to flourish. This is why in most general use areas of a home or workplace, such as a bedroom or office, mold will rarely be visible, let alone have a strong, detectable smell. These areas are usually too well-lit and dry to provide what mold is looking for. Instead, people should look to the more out of the way places such as:

Mold In Bathrooms

This is especially true if the bathroom also has a bathtub with a shower or a shower stall. The regular usage of bathtubs and showers brings steam and humidity into a bathroom. If there are few or no windows for privacy reasons, then a bathroom that remains dark most of the time is a good breeding ground.

Mold In The Attic

An attic, crawlspace, or other areas under the roof is another prime location for mold formation. If there is a leak in a roof, many property owners won’t know about it for some time due to not regularly inspecting. This can result in the rain getting in with every storm. If it gets into the wood or the insulation, it creates a damp environment that can spread throughout the attic or crawlspace.

Mold In The Basement

The basement is another area that is not regularly inspected, especially if there are crawlspaces that no one wants to check. A cracked foundation can mean water seeps in from the ground with every rainstorm or snowmelt. If it gets in out-of-the-way areas, like where electrical wiring or water pipes are housed, it may go undetected for a long time.
