HOW TO GET RID OF SMOKE SMELL FROM YOUR HOME

If you or anyone in your household smokes, consider banishing smoke breaks to the garage or patio.

CLEANING SERVICES PROS ON REMOVING UN PLEASANT ODORS

The smell of smoke in your home is entirely unpleasant.  Whether from years of cigarette smoking or from an isolated cooking mishap, the pungent smell of smoke doesn’t usually go away without a fight.

DIY Smoke Smell Removal Tips

There are many different methods for getting rid of smoke smell, but some are better than others. We’ll try to only give you the better tips.

Obviously, the first thing you want to do is open the windows to get the air circulating throughout your house.  If you have a couple box fans, set one up at one end of your home, blowing fresh air IN and the other at the opposite end, blowing the bad air OUT.

The porous, absorptive nature of fabrics makes them a magnet for odors. If the smoke smell has permeated fabrics in your home, such as curtains, carpets and drapes, either wash or dry clean them or have them outright replaced. Before you replace those carpets though (an expensive proposition), try sprinkling them with baking soda, then vacuuming up after a day.

Don’t Just Mask It, Neutralize It

There are several aromas you can create that will counteract the smell of the smoke.  We’re not talking about odor-masking agents like aerosol sprays and other air fresheners (though they can certainly help in a pinch). No, we’re talking about natural methods like boiling lemon slices or cloves, or sprinkling cinnamon, sugar and butter on a baking sheet and heating it in the oven.  Another thing to try is burning a small bundle of sage or some cedar wood to neutralize the bad smell in the house.

One of the more effective approaches is to use some natural, readily available materials to soak up the offending stench. For instance, you can put a slice of white bread on a saucer, pour some white vinegar over it, and leave it out in the smelliest areas of your house.  Orange peels are also known to soak up bad odors. And, of course, there’s the old standby: Baking soda. Just pour some into a few bowls and place them throughout your house wherever the smoke smell is the worst.

These methods, or a combination of them, can often be very effective in getting a stubborn smoke smell out of your house or apartment.
