How Do Professionals Remove Mold?
Mold can be a significant health risk for a building, whether it’s a commercial facility or a private residence. People who breathe in mold spores regularly can, over time, develop respiratory, cardio, or even neurological symptoms that may be permanent. This is why mold removal is crucial for the health of everyone in a building, but it’s no easy task.
Just buying an off-the-shelf retail cleaning product and scrubbing at a visible mold stain will not remove a mold infestation. Severe infestations in the South Milwaukee area require a professional touch, but what does commercial or industrial grade mold removal do that DIY solutions don’t?
Air Sampling
This isn’t always required. However, in cases where the presence of mold isn’t immediately visible, or people would like an in-depth assessment of the type of spore and possible toxicity levels, an air sample is crucial. This may also be done after the mold remediation process to ensure that acceptable air quality is now present on the property. If the mold is already visible on walls, this step may not be unnecessary unless you want an early indicator of the type of mold present and whether it presents a health risk.
Assessing The Infestation
The next step is finding out the true extent of the mold infestation. The spread of mold can sometimes be far more pervasive than is initially visible. Walls or carpet with mold stain are apparent, but the mold can also be in wet insulation for a leaky roof dripping into an attic. It can be behind the walls if there’s a leak or even burst pipe. Every area where mold is present must be found and targeted, otherwise, it will grow back given enough time.
Mold Remediation
This has many steps depending on the extent of the initial inspection and assessment. Some basic methods always followed include:
1. Addressing Moisture
Whether this is fixing a leaky pipe, so it no longer drips or extracting water from a flood zone and then drying the area out, this is crucial. Mold requires moisture, so it is only by removing the moisture factor that new mold growth can be prevented.
2. Isolation & Suppression
Once the areas have been noted and targeted, this must be separated from the rest of the property. Barriers to block off mold areas and misting to keep down the spread of dust ensure that work can be done without spreading mold spores into uncontaminated areas.
3. Damage Removal
Some portions of a building are beyond recovery and can only be removed from the property. Drywall that is heavily infected with mold or fabric such as carpeting or certain types of furniture may also need to be permanently removed from the property.
4. Cleaning
Industrial grade biocide cleaning agents on used or remaining areas, an encapsulate is sprayed to trap any remaining spores, and a HEPA air scrubber may be used to ensure no more spore remains in the air.
