DON’T FORGET THE FURNITURE: A GUIDE TO FURNITURE CLEANING

Furniture Cleaning

If you don’t have your furniture cleaned on a regular basis, then you are missing a large part of what causes odors and allergens in your home. Just like your carpet, your furniture gets a lot of wear and tear. It also absorbs any odors in the air, which could make your home smell bad. Good furniture cleaning is an important part of any deep home cleaning.

Why Should You Clean Your Furniture?

Most of us probably vacuum or wipe down our furniture periodically and assume that is all that is necessary for furniture cleaning. However, just like your carpets, deep cleaning can get rid of odors and help prolong the life of your furniture.

How to Clean Your Furniture

Every piece of furniture is different, so what works for your comfortable couch may not be a good idea for your antique armchair. Most pieces of furniture have a tag on them that tells you the best method of cleaning for that piece of furniture. Some pieces are fine with a damp scrub and detergent. You can even take the covers off cushions and throw them in the washing machine. Other pieces may not be able to tolerate any water at all, and you will need a special kind of washing agent to get them clean.

Some Dos and Don’ts of Furniture Cleaning

Do not soak your furniture. When you are cleaning your furniture, use as little water as possible. It takes a long time for furniture to dry, and the wetter it is, the longer it will take to dry. The excess water could even lead to mold and mildew if your furniture isn’t able to quickly dry completely.

Do use a slightly damp cloth or upholstery cleaning brush to gently scrub the area. It’s best to use a circular motion and don’t scrub too hard. Also, remember to vacuum the furniture first to suck up as much dirt as possible and to fluff up the fabric for easier cleaning.

Do not scrape off any dried-on stains with a sharp object. This can end up damaging your upholstery fabric and lead to holes in your furniture.

Do use a baking soda paste to gently scrub the area if necessary. Also, the bubbling action of club soda is useful for breaking up and lifting stains. Gently pour a small amount of club soda on the stain and blot it up with a dry towel. If the care tag on your furniture states no water, then you may need to call a professional furniture cleaning service.

Knowing how to properly clean your furniture will help it stay clean and look good for many years. Since our furniture is loved so much every day, it is also a good idea to have it professionally cleaned at least every two years. This will help extend the life of your furniture, and in some cases is even recommended by the manufacturer. At ERS, we know how to deep clean any piece of furniture and can keep it looking as good as new. GIve us a call today!
