The Milwaukee Lionel Railroad Club is a highly educational, charitable, non-profit, as well as benevolent organization that welcomes individuals to participate as one in the spirit of fellowship. The club does this by way of preserving the country’s railroad heritage, operating, demonstrating and maintaining toy trains to model railroading, while providing educational related opportunities about railroading. Coupled with this is provision of important information on how ancient railroading had an influence on the country’s history, past as well as current development.
The Milwaukee Lionel Railroad Club was founded back in 1947 by a gentleman named Jerry Brettschneider. This was after a big snow storm shut down the city momentarily. Jerry started the club alongside five of his friends from the neighborhood, as a way of passing time following the nasty storm. The Milwaukee Lionel Railroad Club is one of Wisconsin’s state oldest clubs. Shortly after their establishment, the group was allowed to officially go by the name Lionel Railroad Club by Joshua Lionel Cowen.
In the years that followed, the club continue to grow majorly, and eventually it had to be moved from Jerry’s parents’ basement. In 1975, the club official headquarters moved to N 79 Burleigh Street and in 1984 it moved to a larger location in Fond Du Lac Ave. 10236 W. March 2002 eventually saw the Milwaukee Lionel Railroad Club purchase its own commercial space, after which it moved to New Berlin, WI, 2721 S. Calhoun Road. With this came along the construction of a new hi-rail kind of rail layout, which featured Hellgate Bridge, carrying rail tracks for both O Gauge and Standard Gauge trains. This railroad can accommodate up to 17 trains simultaneously.
The club got engaged in an array of beneficial programs including the Boy Scout Merit Badge Program and the Operation Lifesaver. Today, there are both small and large scale railroad models meant for community progress. The club has always ensure to run a popular and high class Toy-train Collectibles train show series since the year 1976.
